Mobile storage: an innovative, refreshing alternative
to traditional self storage

By Wendy Burkett
Big Box Storage

Over the past 40 years, self storage units have become an integral part of more than 30 million American households. We use storage to prepare for a move, to stage our homes for a faster sale, to store files and folders and to store the extra “stuff” that we can’t quite eliminate completely from our lives.

While traditional storage is relatively easy, a rapidly emerging sector within the storage industry makes the process much easier and more hassle free. Mobile storage was made popular by the national PODS brand. But since then, others have developed a smaller portable container that is much friendlier to residential communities and those needing a smaller amount of storage.

The containers measure 5 feet wide, 8 feet long and 7 feet tall. They can hold a surprisingly large amount of belongings like king sized mattresses, boxes, bicycles, motorcycles, etc. Rather than needing to pack a truck then drive to a storage facility and unload your belongings, these containers can be placed in your driveway for convenient loading and unloading close to your door.

When you’re finished loading your container(s), the company picks them up and stores them in a climate-controlled, secure facility that is monitored by digital cameras. Some customers go to the facility to access belongings after they place them in storage and others prefer to have the containers delivered back to their home or office.

Pricing is comparative to traditional storage. Monthly rent charges vary depending on how many containers you need, how long you’ll need them and where you need them delivered to.

It’s easy to see the bright future this industry has when you consider the convenience and affordable pricing it offers. While mobile storage might not be right for everyone, it’s certainly an option worth considering the next time you need storage and are looking for an easy, safe and affordable way to get the job done.
