Setting positive goals sets your business up for success

By Barb Cline, AAR President

Not all real estate agents are equal. Each brings his or her own unique gifts to the job.

It is imperative that you understand your own special gifts, and then put them to work in a way that not only makes you more successful but also makes you stand out from all the other agents in your market. Think about your strengths and then develop specific ways to put them to work in your business life.

Set goals around your strengths and work toward those goals to make your business more successful. So that your goals are meaningful and positively influence your business, use these tips:

• Make sure that each goal you are working for is something you really want, not just something that sounds good. And when setting your goals, it is very important to remember that your goals should be consistent with your values.

• One goal cannot contradict any of your other goals. What I mean is that you cannot, for example, have a goal to close 20 transactions and also work only one day per week!

• Write your goals in the positive instead of the negative. Part of the reason we write down and examine our goals is to create a set of instructions for our subconscious mind to carry out. The more positive your instructions, the more positive the results.

• Write your goals down with much detail. Once again, we are giving the subconscious mind a detailed set of instructions to work on. The more information we can give the subconscious, the clearer the final outcome becomes.

• Review your goals frequently. Each morning when you wake up, read your list of goals that are written in the positive. Visualize the completed goals. Then each night, right before you go to bed, repeat the process.

Doing this will start both your subconscious and conscious mind on working towards the goal. It will also begin to replace any of the negative self-talk you may have and replace it with positive self-talk. Remember, the more focused you are on your goals, the more likely you are to accomplish them.

• Make sure your goals are high enough. Shoot for the moon and realize that, like motivational speaker Les Brown said, even if you miss, you will land among the stars. And sure, sometimes we realize we have to revise a goal as circumstances and other goals change. If you need to change a goal, do not consider that a failure. Consider it a victory: you have the insight to realize something needs to change.

I encourage each of you to set your goals for the coming year. As a matter of fact, I encourage you to go to the Aurora Association of REALTORS® web site; download the application for the Masters Club and set that as a goal for 2009. If you know now what the requirements are, you will have something to strive for. We would love to see your name as a member next year! Remember…you make the difference in your own business.
