I double dog dare you!

By Felicia Stanton, AAR Director of the Board

February 2008
Index of all Leadership Speaks! columns

When I think back to when I was a kid and accepted the challenge of a “double dog dare,” I can remember usually being scared or apprehensive at first. But if I followed through, I always learned something, made a friend, or grew in some way.

The new year is here. To make the most of your professional life in 2008, I double dog dare you to...

Attend a Friday morning REALTOR® Update Meeting
Weekly guest speakers have proven to provide a worthwhile way to spend 15 minutes of your time each week. Get inspired, learn something, and sometimes just plain have fun!

Also at the meetings, you can present your new listings and any price changes, and the AAR staff will send a letter to your sellers letting them know that you did so; The Aurora Sentinel and Buckley Guardian will publish those new listings once free of charge. You can let other REALTORS® know about your upcoming open houses and your buyers’ wants and needs. And you can network with AAR’s professional Affiliate members.

Make no mistake - many success stories have evolved from such informational exchanges as those at the weekly REALTOR® Update meetings!

Become more involved in the social activities sponsored by the Association or its Affiliates
Each season brings great networking opportunities at AAR. In winter, attend the Holiday Luncheon; in spring, it’s the Bowling Tournament. Summer heats up with a fun Golf Tournament, and the Inaugural happens every fall. Affiliate-organized events happen all the time! This great group puts on Aurora After Hours throughout the year; a Texas Hold ’Em Tournament (it’s scheduled for March 6) and the REALTOR® Appreciation Day and Family Picnic, on the calendar June 21.

The events are a lot of fun, but that’s not all. They are the perfect place for meeting and greeting, learning about your colleagues by spending some leisure time with them, and getting to know those who could be on the other side of your next deal.

Consider running for an Association leadership position in 2008
Give back to the real estate community by giving some of your time to Association. It’s a very integral part of your livelihood.

Participate in this year’s PSF fundraising
Learn what the Political Survival Fund (PSF) is and how it helps you as a REALTOR®. Help organize fundraising efforts or just contribute your fair share to ensure that REALTOR® issues are addressed appropriately in the legislature.

Join Government Affairs
Become familiar with the issues that are affecting you as a REALTOR®, what changes can be expected in existing laws, and what new laws are being considered. You can even get to know a little more about the city of Aurora’s political characters and state legislators. It can take as much time as you wish – get heavily involved, or just attend the monthly Government Affairs Forum at AAR.

Sign up to be on the “Calls To Action” list
This is a very easy and important way to voice support of or opposition to political issues that may affect the public, your industry, your career. Visit www.realtors.org and www.coloradorealtors.com and sign up to get e-mails whenever your help is needed to address REALTOR® issues in national, state or local politics.

Get to know AAR’s Affiliate members
They come to REALTOR® Update meetings, sponsor countless AAR events, and are professionals in their respective fields. These are people worth getting to know.

Attend a class at the Association
AAR’s staff members work hard to offer classes that are worth your time and money. There are also free “Lunch and Learn” classes and other no-cost seminars available.

Become a more active member of AAR
The above “dares” are not the only opportunities offered by the Aurora Association of REALTORS® that can give you valuable ways to improve or grow. Find out what other opportunities exist, and make the most of them.
