REALTORS® are on the frontline as Property Rights Protectors
by Debbie Green
It's a new year and as real estate professionals, we face a multitude of issues and concerns. I wonder if you realize that you, as a REALTOR®, are truly in the forefront as
a protector of private property rights.
As independent business owners, we must be aware of changing legislation that affects our business practices and our ability to earn a living. As an organization, we truly should be deeply involved in all aspects of the formation of public policy. We can achieve these ends and protect the rights of our customers and clients and our rights only through education and awareness. Armed with these important tools, we can take a proactive stance. The state and local associations work on:
- Preserving the separation of banking and commerce
- Increasing the transparency of real estate transactions and maintaining efficiency of mortgage finance system
- Stimulating affordable housing opportunities
- Fostering a healthy quality of life and balanced environmental regulations
At the Aurora Association of REALTORS®, we have members and staff who devote a large block of time to helping us stay informed and educated about the issues and rules, regulations and laws that come up yearly in the legislature.
The new city council and mayor in Aurora and the new mayor and legislators in Denver are working in a more cooperative environment. We all hope this will create more opportunities for our industry.
Here are some of the issues we may face this year:
- Insurance
- Water and land use
- Banks in real estate
- Takings
- Merging of parcels by county governments (no notification to owner)
- And many other issues.
Take time to come to the Friday morning REALTOR® Update meetings at AAR office for up-to-date information. Consider volunteering your time on one of the committees at the Association. Come to the governmental affairs information meetings - after all, it is for your benefit that this is available to you.
Remember, "We the People" means all of us.
