The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
by Debbie Green

At last spring is here and things are starting to pop!

We have more hours of daylight, warmer afternoons and evenings, and for many of us, hay fever and other allergies are causing a wide variety of symptoms like runny noses, watery eyes and more sneezes than there are listings in the whole MLS system. I guess we must take the good with the bad and the ugly.

The good includes increased showings of our listings, an increase in the number of under contracts and more buyers. That’s good. The price of gas is going up and up – that’s bad - but we can rationalize it by saying it is the cost of doing business.

No matter what the cost is to drive to properties is, the increase in showings and offers is a very good thing. But unfortunately, we hear from our front desk staff that some real estate professionals are very short tempered when they call to set showings. This is just plain ugly! Faxed offers show up at offices with no courtesy call to let the broker know they are receiving an offer, and getting showing feedback is extremely difficult. This is bad.

Turn it into good instead with some easy steps. When you receive a faxed request for feedback sheets or a call in your voicemail requesting feedback, please take one or two minutes to respond - you just might make someone's day. When you drop off an offer or fax an offer to another broker, please take a minute to call and let that broker know what you are doing. When you call to set a showing, please show the front desk person some courtesy and remember - don’t kill the messenger. If you have a beef, take it to right person you are upset with rather than hassling the front desk staff. This is good, very good!

We need to remember that in good times, good manners and courtesy are barely noticed, but in bad times good manners and courtesy are greatly appreciated and separate the good, the bad and the ugly.

I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming events at the Association including the PSF Kickoff and Silent Auction April 16 and the City Council Dinner April 29. Please call AAR at (303) 369-5549 for more info.
