Continuing education compliance: random audits begin this month
In the Summer/Fall 2011 issue of the Colorado Real Estate News, the Colorado Real Estate Commission (CREC) introduced Eric Turner as the Division's Education, Communication and Policy manager. In the same issue came the announcement that the Division of Real Estate will perform continuing education audits in the near future, pulling random licenses from the database to verify compliance.
Check your files…
As the year winds down, it's time to check your files and scour your memory to see whether you have taken the 2011 Annual Commission Update Course and whether you have a certificates to prove that you have completed three annual Commission Update Courses in your licensing cycle. Each course can be taken only once and after a calendar year has passed, licensees cannot go back and take the Commission Update Course if they missed it for that year.
In addition to the three Annual Commission Update Courses, you must take 12 hours of any combination of Commission-approved courses and keep certificates in your files to verify completion.
It pays to stay current
The price you pay for not keeping your certificates and failing to stay current in your coursework can be dear. If the CREC audits you and you are unable to produce your certificates, do not have 24 hours of continuing education or have less than 12 hours of Annual Commission Update course hours, you must show compliance by doing one of the following:
1. Pass the Colorado portion of the licensing exam. The exam must be taken during the stated license cycle. OR
2. Complete the 24-hour Brokerage Administration course (allowed only once during licensure) taken during the states license cycle. OR
3. Complete the 24-hour Brokerage Transition course (allowed only once during licensure) taken during the stated license cycle. OR
4. Complete 72 total hours in the Colorado Contracts and Regulations course (48 hours) and Real Estate Closings (24 hours) during the stated license cycle.
Here to help you
While you are ultimately responsible for maintaining a file of your own course completion certificates, the staff at AAR maintain files of certificates of courses held at our location. For all other certificates, contact the provider.
AAR offers three 2011 Annual Commission Update Course before the end of the year. See the education schedule in this issue for a list of C.E.-accredited courses.
